 Greatness Of Temple:

Lord Shiva graces the devotees with Mother Perianayaki from this west facing temple.  As Vali took away the wife of his brother Sugriva worshipped Lord to cleanse his sin, Lord is praised as Valeeswarar.  Lord Veerabadra came here on Vrushab Vahan-Nandhi.  This Nandhi is outside the temple with Kodimaram-flag post nearby.

Usually, we hear pujas offered to Lord Dakshinamurthi on Thursdays only in Shiva temples   But it is performed throughout the seven days of the week in this temple.  Fate of people is decided by Lord Brahmma according to general belief.  He is the deity for Mother Brahmmi.  Those concerned with their fate, those seeking mental peae and to obtain high ranks in education pray to Brahmmi on Sundays.  Those seeking total salvation pray to Mother Maheswari on Mondays.  Those facing adverse aspects of planet Mars pray to Goumari.  Lord Muruga is the deity for Mars and Goumari.  They do this prayer on Tuesdays.

Devotees pray to Mother Vaishnavi on Saturdays for family prosperity and Varahi on Wednesdays for relief from diseases.  People pray to Indrani on Thursdays for relief from adverse aspect of planets and Chamundi on Fridays for removal of obstacles in wedding proposals.  While worshipping these Saptha Kannikas for realizing their needs, they also offer nivedhanas to Lord Dakshinamurthi as these Kannikas act under the directions of Guru-Dakshinamurthi.  On Panchami days-5th day of new moon or full moon days- special pujas are dedicated to Lord Veerabadra.

  Temple History:

Demon Mahishasura had the boon that he should not be killed by a woman born from the womb of a mother.  With the strength of this boon, he began to harass and torture Devas.  They appealed to Lord Shiva for protection.  Lord asked Ambica to take up this job.  Ambica produced seven Sakthis from Her-Brahmmi, Mahaswari, Goumari, Vaishnavi, Vaarahi, Indrani and Chamundi.  They destroyed demon Mahishasura.  They sought the blessing of Lord Shiva to cleanse themselves of the dosha incurred by them for killing the demon.  Lord Shiva asked them to go Bhooloka-Earth and worship Him and assured that He would give them the relief at an appropriate time.  He also sent Veerabadra for their security.  Lord Shiva granted the relief and made them security deities for Shakti-Ambica in Shiva temples.  Based on this story, the Saptha Kannikas act as directed by their Guru Lord Dakshinamurthi.  This is a rare feature in this temple.  Lord Dakshinamurthy is praised in this temple as Kanni Guru.
