 General Information:

The shrine of Lord Ganapathi is set at the Kannimoola corner.  The phallus on which the Shivalinga installed earlier was in square shape in a damaged condition.  A devotee offered a new phallus in the usual round shape which is now placed above the old square one.  Now Lord Nageswara in His Linga form is at a higher level with Nagabarana Alankara.  Only pure cow milk is accepted in the temple for abhishek.  Packet milk is not accepted.  There are separate shrines for Lord Chandikeswara, Vishnu and Muruga.  The shrines for Lord Bhairava and Navagrahas the nine planets are in the northeast side of the temple.  It is believed that planets Rahu and Ketu worshipped Lord Shiva in this temple, hence a five hooded Adisesha lighting pillar is installed in the temple for deepa worship.  On the Deepam festival in Karthikai month-November-December, devotees light Deepas here.  It is also believed that a serpent from the Kanchima Nadhi visited the temple during midnight.  Naga Kannikas brought Theertha from Kanchima Nadhi for abishek of the Lord.

 Greatness Of Temple:

The Idol of Mother Muthu Vali Amman is an outstanding example of sculptural skill perfectly matching to religious rules, hence the beauty is unquestionable.  Some even claim that no Goddess idol could be more beautiful that that of Mother Amman in this temple.  Holding Neelotpala flower and an ornament known as Pariakam in hands, Katakas in the shoulders, ear rings, nose ring, rings in the fingers, Mother Muthuvali Amman is all beauty personified coupled with Her compassion flowing from eyes.  The hair style is sculpted in a 9 tier model.

She belongs to Tripurai aspect of Mother Parvathi.  It is but true that even a gifted poet cannot describe the minute skill employed by the jewel maker in making the golden belt around the hip of Mother Muthu Vali Amman.  So that of the sculptor. It is believed that the same sculptor who made the idol of Madurai Meenakshi, made this idol also.  The other wonder is the Nandhi touching the folded leg of Lord Dakshinamurthy.  A devotee-cum researcher needs a long time to study the craftsmanship of the sculptor with such divine skills.

  Temple History:

Muttam is the place at the foothills of Vellingir in Coimbatore district praised as Kailas of the South – Thenkayilai.  This is the origin of Kanchima Nadhi.  It flows through Perur a famous Shivasthala in Tamilnadu.  It joins Noyyal here and runs up to Karur.  According to historical evidences, Chola kings built 36 Shiva temples beginning from Muttam up to Karur.

Epigraphical details reveal that the place was earlier known as Amara Puyanga Nallur Chaturvedhi Mangalam surrounded by forests and a fort.  There was also a tank nearby.  The temple is an outstanding example of temple architecture.

The beauty of the temple once in its heights during the Chara and Chola rules, began to decay due to neglect, impact of other religions, British rule and confusions that arose about the grant of lands.  All Brahmins in the place migrated to other places.  The holy place turned into a jungle region with bushes.  Archeological scientist Mr. I. Ramaswami writes, “I had been visiting this Muttam temple since I was 15.  I could not move my eyes from the gracious beauty of Mother Amman.  Now it is a place for wild bushes.  There are no doors for the temple.  Half the temple is now covered with sand.  The noise of the sparrows is horrible.”

It was decided by a devotee group to renovate the temple without compromising with its original beauty.  The contribution of Perur Adheenam in the renovation works is remarkable.  Bringing it back to its original glory, the consecration was celebrated on 14th December, 2011.
