As the temple is associated with Tiruchendur Sura Samharam event, its antiquity is believed to be millenniums back.

Experiences of devotees show that every prayer at the feet of Lord Kumara Kadavul, be it for wedding, child boon, total remedy from physical disabilities and security from enemy threats are responded by Lord without fail.

The significance of the Holy Tree Udai Maram is believed to be a stick thrown by Lord Kumara Kadavul after brushing His teeth.  The tree has no roots and appears like an umbrella.  There are flowers and it produces fruits/seeds but they will not germinate.  The leaves of the tree, if consumed as Prasad, cure any severe disease.  Cooked rice (Annam in Tamil) is not offered as nivedhana to Lord but hand pounded rice, Pasi Dal, jaggery and Thinai flower honey are offered as nivedhana.  The 33 abishek to Lord on each monthly Kruthika night is a great event in the temple.

Lord Muruga-Kumara Kadavul sought the Mazhu weapon from Mother Parvathi to kill Surapanma and his brother, according to scriptures.  Based on the Mazhu weapon story, the place was earlier named Mazhuvalur and later changed as Kodumalur.  After killing Surapanma and Banukoban, holding the head of the demon, Lord Muruga came to Mela Kodumalur and granted darshan to the Maharishis of the place.  Lord is facing west and grants darshan to devotees in His standing posture.  The name of Muruga in this place is Kumara Kadavul Subramania Swami.  He appears as a war commander.
