Prayers

Devotees seeking child boon pray toVedatri Narasimhar to offer Uyyala worship.

Thanks giving:

Those realizing their wishes leave a knife as their Kanikka.

 Greatness Of Temple:

To worship Swayambu Narasimhar, the devotees have to reach the hill temple through 285 steps.  There is a stone carved idol of Sri Anjaneya in the hill temple.  Women expecting marriage tie a yellow thread in the tree here.  Those seeking child boon tie cradles.  There are Nagar idols also here.  People can also have a river view from the hill top.  Safety steps are built for bathing in the river.
Uyyala in Telugu means cradle.  Realizing their child boon, devotees place Lord Narasimha and Mother Chenchu Lakshmi in cradle and swing it back and forth.
Though a Vishnu temple, there is a shrine for Lord Shiva too here.   Lord Shiva is praised as Sri Visweswara Swami and Mother as Parvathi Ammavaru.  During festival time, they come in procession in a small rath.  There is Nandhi too in Shiva shrine.  There is also a shrine for Veerabadraswami.  Sacred ash Prasad is not offered in the temple.  Instead, Theertham Prasad is offered and Jadari embossed with Shiva Feet is placed on devotees’ heads.
A woman devotee came to the temple seeking remedy for her acute stomach pain.  Doctors had no hopes of her recovery despite a surgery.  She and her family prayed to Lord Narasimha.  She survived after the surgery.  They believed that Lord Vedatri Natha Himself performed the surgery in the form of the surgeon.  Till now, she is visiting the temple.  The knife, she left at the feet of Lord as her Kanikka, is still in the shrine.  It is worth recalling the advice of Sage Veda Vyasa that faith in Lord Narasimha would protect the devotees from any threatening situation in this Kaliyuga.  The devotee worshipping Lord Narasimha will attain salvation.  The present temple was built by Reddy kings 900 years ago.  Inspired poets Erra Pragata and Kavi Sarvabouma Sreenatha Vyakya Kara Narayana Theerthalu had sung the glory of Lord Narasimha.  There are mentions in the holy books about this Narasimha such as Stotra Dandaka, Kasi Kandam etc.

  Temple History:

Somakshura, a demon snatched the four Vedas from Lord Brahmma the Creator and disappeared into the sea.  Lord Brahmma appealed to Lord Vishnu for the recovery the scriptures.  Lord Narayana took the Matsavadhara incarnation – Fish Avatar - plunged into the sea, destroyed the demon and recovered the Vedas and handed over to Brahmma.  The Vedas took human form and expressed their gratitude to Lord for protecting them from the hands of the demon.  They begged the Lord to stay in the place where they (Vedas) were then.  Lord Perumal told them that He could not grant the boon then but would fulfill their wish when He tooki the Narasimha Avatar to kill Hiranya.  The Vedas stayed in the Salagrama hill on the banks of Krishnaveni River.  River Krishnaveni approached the Vedas to help her also to have the darshan of Lord.
As promised, Perumal came to the place after destroying Hiranya and named the place as Veda Athri – Mount of Vedas.  He too stayed there but was too furious which no one could endure.  Lord Brahmma came to Vedatri from His Satyaloka.  He took a slagrama stone from Krishnaveni River but placed it in the river back as He could not bear the heat and fury.  Later Rishya Sringa came here for conducting the Putrakameshti Yagna – a Yajna seeking child boon – for Emperor Dasaratha installed Mahalakshmi in the place to soften Narasimha’s fury.  Lord was softened.  Thus, Ugra Narasimha became Lakshmi Narasimha.
Garuda Bhagwan came down to earth from Vaikunda to earth with a Narasimha and placed it in a spot at Vedatri hills.  That place is now known as Garudathri.
Lord Narasimha is praised here by five names as Veera Narasimha, Jwala Narasimha, Salagrama Narasimha, Lakshmi Narasimha  and Yogananda Narasimha in the sanctum sanctorum.
