Aani Tirumanjanam (June-July), Chambakasura Shashti in Karthikai (November-December) and Triambakashtami in Panguni (March-April) are the festivals celebrated in the temple.
Temple's Speciality:
The Aarati, sandal, kumkum and sacred ash and flowers offered to Lord Kalabhairava are not offered in turn to the devotees as Prasad. Also no Prasad is offered in the shrines of Lord and Mother in the temple.

General Information:
The temple is in the shape of a tent and in a bad state.There is no tower.Devotees have to come forward, offer donations liberally for the renovation and consecration.
There are shrines for Dakshinamurthy with Muyalagan under His feet. Saturn facing west, Sun, Moon, Saptha Kannikas (7 maidens) and the guardian deity Karuppusamy are in the temple.

Devotees offer cosmetic pastes to Lord Shiva and garlands made of Vada (a popular dish of the south) to Lord Bhairava.
Greatness Of Temple:
When the king of this region came to the temple, his minister demanded that the arati offered to Lord Bhairava and other prasads as kumkum, sandal and the sacred ash should be offered first to the king and to the public then only. When the king came out of the temple after worship, his eyes and the forehead with the sandal began to show burn wounds causing leprosy. The shocked king came back to Bhairava shrine and sought the pardon for demanding priority in getting Prasad. Lord Bhairava mercifully pardoned and cured his disease. This is the story behind the non-offering of prasads to devotees in the temple, it is said. Lord Kala Bhairava graces from a separate shrine. A yajna is conducted in the shrine on Ashtami day in the new moon fortnight if any devotee or devotees contribute for the same. The Vada for the garland is prepared in cow ghee. The fee for this is Rs. 300/=. Lord Bhairava comes in procession during the Champaka Sura Sashti festival all the six days. The events of Lord killing demons Padmasuran and Mallasuran are played during this festival. As Lord Bhairava occupies more importance, the temple is popularly known as Bhairava Temple.
Temple History:
After Lord Sri Rama’s return to Ayodhya from Lanka with Mother Sita, the sages with Him also returned to their respective places. Sage Durvasa, passing through this way, found a Linga and worshipped. The Linga got buried in days that followed. A milk vendor passing through this route fell usually at a particular place hit by the root of a tree. When he cut the root to make safe way, it began to bleed. He found a Shivalinga. The temple was built here then.

Location : Tirumayam is 85 km far from Madurai on the Pudukkottai road. Durvasapuram is 9 km from Tirumayam. Buses are available at Tirumayam only at specific hours. People know this place as Dhoorma only.
